North Cornwall Local Gains National Recognition in Gastropub Awards

23 Nov North Cornwall Local Gains National Recognition in Gastropub Awards

While good company can always be found at the Port Gaverne Hotel, the popular north coast pub now finds itself mixing in the best circles as it joins the shortlist for one of the three coveted awards in the specialist categories at the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs 2016 awards.

After battling through the opening rounds, ten pubs including the Port Gaverne now go head-to-head in a second round of judging in the coming weeks. Each venue will have their food offer, service and overall business scrutinised by the Publican’s Morning Advertiser’s food team and guest judge David Hancock, managing director, Inn Places.

The awards, which recognise the best newcomer, the best front-of-house manager and the best business innovation, will be announced on the same day as the Top 50 list at an exclusive lunch at two Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge’s famous Hand & Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire in January 2016.

Going up against the Kentish Hare in Kent and the Beehive in Berkshire in the Best Newcomer contest, David Barnard, landlord of the St Austell Brewery-owned Port Gaverne said, ‘Just to be included in the Top 10 list with such well-established pubs and restaurants is a real honour and it is testament to the hard work that we all put in here as a team at the Port Gaverne. We’re looking forward to the next round and we know that with the great service and great food and drink we offer here, we’re in with a real shout for the top prize.’

The awards and the list are the greatest way to get the name of your pub out there, according to James Healey, UK sales manager of the event’s lead sponsor Estrella Damm.

‘Making the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list is a high priority for most pub chefs,’ he said. ‘Why wouldn’t you want to be ranked among the greatest food pubs the UK industry has to offer? Customers get a buzz when they know they’re eating in one of the best pubs in the country.’

St Austell Brewery Tenanted Estate Manager Jim Sloan added, ‘This is a great tribute to the team over at the Port Gaverne and what they have achieved in such a relatively short space of time. We knew David had a clear vision for the site when he took it on and this nomination is a clear vindication of his ambition.’

Top 50 Gastropubs 2016 is sponsored by Estrella Damm and associated partners include Appletiser and Schweppes and Berkmann Wine Cellars. For more information, visit
